MUSIC MINISTRY COURSES

Administrative Skills for Music Ministry (10 hours)
This course is a study of the organizational and management skills needed by the person who coordinates or directs music at the parish level.

Cantor Training – Level I (6 hours)
This course will prepare participants for the ministry of cantor by focusing on the history, spirituality, and role of the cantor, as well as basic vocal skills.  PERMISSION OF PASTOR / MUSIC DIRECTOR REQUIRED.

Cantor Training – Level II (6 hours)
Building on Level I, this course focuses on psalmody, its role in the prayer life of the church, and its effective proclamation by the cantor.

Cantor Training – Level III (6 hours)
Building on the previous level of cantor training, this course explores musical/liturgical options available to the advanced cantor.  It includes examples of sung Intercessions, Liturgy of the Hours, etc.

Cantor Training – Level IV (4 hours)
This course offers guided self-evaluation of the cantor as servant and leader.

Children’s Choir (12 hours)
The goal of this course is to acquaint participants not only with the uniqueness of the child’s voice, but also to introduce choral technique, skills in rehearsing and the appropriate repertoire for use in children’s choirs in a liturgical setting.  It also provides time for observation of an active children’s choir.

Choral Techniques (12 hours)
A course designed to introduce music leaders to choral technique, rehearsal skills, and appropriate repertoire for use with adult choirs in Catholic liturgy.

Conducting (12 hours)
An introduction to basic conducting skills for the parish music leader.

Getting to Know the Guitar (8 hours)
Focuses on practical information important to every guitarist (e.g., types of guitars and strings, resonance, amplification, capos, tuners, etc.).

Getting to Know the Organ (8 hours)
A brief history and discussion of the workings of the modern organ, with special emphasis on the buttons, knobs, and bars.  In other words, “How to make the organ do what you want it to do.”

Gregorian Chant (10 hours)
This course introduces the participants to Gregorian Chant and its place in liturgy.

Guitarist as Liturgical Minister (8 hours)
This course focuses on the spirituality of the guitarist as a music minister.

Handbells (12 hours)
This course is designed to introduce parish music leaders to hand bell technique and repertoire appropriate for use in the liturgy.

The Choir in Catholic Liturgy (12 hours)
A course designed to introduce the singer to the history, spirituality and role of the church choir in Catholic worship.  It will also acquaint singers with choral styles, types of choirs and the work of famous choirs and their conductors.

The Place of Music in the Liturgy New GIRM (3 hours)
This course will examine the guidelines for liturgical music in the General Instruction of the Roman Missal 2000.

 

Keyboard for Singers – Level I (15 hours)
This course provides cantors and choir members with basic keyboard skills necessary for playing single line vocal melodies.

Keyboard for Singers – Level II (15 hours)
A continuation of the first course providing more advanced skills.

Liturgical Planning for the Pastoral Musician (12 hours)
Participants will take an in-depth look at the process of liturgical planning with special emphasis on Sunday, liturgical seasons and feasts.

Music and the Liturgy (10 hours)
An in-depth exploration of the church documents which shape the use of music in the liturgy today.

Music Theory for Guitarists (14 hours)
This course will focus on the areas of theory that are of special importance to the guitarist (e.g., scales, chords, chord substitution, transposition, etc.).

Private Guitar Lessons I (up to 12 hours)
These private lessons will be tailored to fit the individual student's needs.

Private Guitar Lessons II (12 hours)
These private lessons will be tailored to fit the individual student's needs.

Private Organ Lessons I (12 hours)
These private lessons will be tailored to fit the individual student's needs.

Private Organ Lessons II (12 hours)
These private lessons will be tailored to fit the individual student's needs.

Private Voice Instruction (12 hours)
A course designed to help the singer develop vocal technique and quality of voice which are conducive to sung prayer.  Also helps develop public presence and vocal confidence.

Service Playing I (15 hours)
Provides organists/pianists with basic skills necessary for playing hymns and service music for Catholic liturgy.

Service Playing II (15 hours)
Building on Level I, this course provides organists/pianists with the advanced skills necessary for playing hymns and service music for Catholic liturgy.

Sight Reading Skills for the Guitarist (11 hours)
This course focuses on basic sight reading skills for the guitarist.

Sight-Singing I (15 hours)
This course is designed to equip participants with basic skills for reading and singing music on sight.

Sight-Singing II (15 hours)
This course continues the development of the skills learned in Sight Singing – Level I.

Styles of Playing the Guitar (10 hours)
A course which covers the mechanics related to various styles of playing the guitar and examines different styles as applied to the liturgical setting.

The Choral Voice (10 hours)
A course designed to acquaint participants with basic skills needed for participation in a Church choir and to heighten singers’ awareness of the importance of the individual singer in the development of choral sound.  It includes instruction on how to read choral music, how to follow the conductor, how to take care of your voice, group dynamics, etc.

The Guitarist in the Ensemble Setting (9 hours)
This course will examine the appropriate use of the guitar with ensemble in a liturgical setting.

Voice Class (12 hours)
This course utilizes a group setting to offer the individual singer basic skills for developing the solo voice.

Working with Instrumentalists (10 hours)
This course helps musicians in their work with instrumental soloists and ensembles.  Special emphasis will be placed on instrumental groupings and repertoire appropriate for use in Catholic liturgy.
