Christian Spirituality

A study of the meaning and history of
Christian spirituality today.

Catholic Social Teaching: The Underlying Spirituality (6 hours)
This course will serve as an introduction to the thought and underpinning spirituality inherent in the wide range of Catholic Social Teaching.

Christian Spirituality (8)
This course will explore the history and foundations of Christian spirituality with an emphasis on the role of prayer, discernment, and reading the signs of the times in developing a spirituality for the 21st century.

Scripture and
the Lectionary Cycle

 

An exploration of Scripture as the basis
for personal and communal prayer.

Bible Basics and the Lectionary (6 hours)
This course is designed to help beginners gain an understanding of our scriptures in the contextual setting of our lectionary readings.

Hebrew Scriptures (14 hours)
An examination of the content and context of the first reading in the three year Sunday lectionary cycle.

New Testament: The Gospels (12 hours)
This course will offer a general introduction to the Gospels that will focus on the week’s Sunday Lectionary reading.  Particular attention will be given to the literary and contextual aspects of the texts.

Reading the Bible--Your Questions, Real Answers (4 hours)
This Short Course will help you get the most out of reading the Bible.

The Psalms As Prayer (10 hours)
This course will explore the Psalms as the staple of Judaeo-Christian prayer.

The Word Entrusted To You(10 hours)
Better appreciation through better understanding means better proclamation in the liturgy and in life. Through an exploration of the Word and the words, we come to an embodied spirituality that continues to reveal the Christ to our world.

Understanding Islam: The Qur'an for Bible Readers (6 hours)
This course will offer a general introduction to Islam.  The beliefs and practices of Muslims will be illustrated through a consideration of how the Qur’an treats the biblical figures Noah, Abraham, Mary, and Jesus.  Points of similarity and divergence between Islam and Christianity will be highlighted and discussed.

Understanding Islam: What Non-Muslims Should Know about Islam (5 hours)
Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world and is at the center of some of the most important social and political issues
of our day. In the light of these current events it is essential that non-Muslims have an accurate understanding of this often
misunderstood faith. This course will discuss six essential aspects of Islam and consider their importance for both Muslims
and non-Muslims.

Understanding Prayer
Exploration of various methods and forms
of prayer with emphasis on developing a
deeper and more enriched prayer life.

Centering Prayer (10 hours)
This course will introduce participants to centering prayer, a method that assists the pray-er in learning the art of being in God’s presence without using words or images.

Contemplation I (8 hours)
A course designed to introduce participants to the prayer of contemplation.

Devotional Prayer (5 hours)
A study of devotional prayer and its role in Catholic life.

Lectio Divina: Sipping from the Cup of Divine Wisdom (8 hours)
This course will examine an ancient form of Christian prayer centered on the Word as a vital tool for living in the Word.  Various prayer settings and appropriate textual sources will be explored, as participants learn a new / old way to pray.

Meditation (6 hours)
This course is an introduction to the principles and practice of Christian meditation.

Prayer with Mary (5 hours)
This course situates Mary within the Church as a model of prayer and active participation in the redemption of the world. By examining Church teaching on Mary, the course will offer the possibility of a growing relationship with her as we too seek to say “Yes” to God in all things.

Close study of the lives and works of significant Christian writers, ancient to contemporary, who serve as models of the spiritual life.

Dorothy Day: Her Life and Times (10 hours)
An introduction to the life, writings and spirituality of Dorothy Day, the founder of the Catholic Worker Movement, a movement dedicated to nonviolence, voluntary poverty, prayer, and hospitality for the homeless, exiled, hungry, and forsaken.

Ignatian Spirituality: An Introduction (10 hours)
This course will teach participants how to use the main working principles of the spirituality of St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuits and creator of the 30-Day Spiritual Exercises that have transformed lives since the sixteenth century.

Introduction to Augustine of Hippo

Introduction to Benedict, Father of Western Monasticism
(10 hours)
This course will briefly explore the history of St. Benedict, a man who is known almost exclusively through the spirituality taught in the Rule for Monks ascribed to him.  The main focus of the course is on exploring the Rule of Benedict as a viable spiritual path for the diversity of Catholic faithful today.

Introduction to Christian Mystics

Introduction to John of the Cross (15 hours)
An introduction to the writings of St. John of the Cross with emphasis on
The Ascent of Mount Carmel and The Dark Night of the Soul.

Introduction to Oscar Romero (10 hours)
This course will explore the life, death, and spirituality of Oscar Romero, Archbishop of San Salvador, advocate of the poor and ‘voice of the voiceless.’

Introduction to Teresa of Avila

Introduction to Thomas Merton (10 hours)
An introduction to the life, spirituality, and writings of Thomas Merton (1915-1968).

Spiritual Roots of Dorothy Day: The Catholic Worker Movement
(12 hours)
This course will explore the various philosophical and religious influences leading Dorothy Day and Peter Maurin to begin the Catholic Worker Movement.

Thomas Merton: Contemplation in a World of Action (8 hours)
A reflective study of the nature and practice of contemplation as developed in the works of Thomas Merton.

Christian Friendship

Doctrinal Devotion to Mary (12 hours)
This course will explain what the Church really teaches about Mary, why it teaches these things, and explore the practical influence they should have in our lives.

Listening as an Art of Being (10 hours)
A contemplative approach to communication and our relationship with others in a culture of noise.

Proactive Spirituality (12 hours)
This course will identify the stages of commitment we need to focus on in order to live our baptismal commitment in a whole, progressive and exciting way. It is designed to empower those who would like to live intentional spiritual lives themselves, and help others to do so.

Spiritual Growth through Matthew's Gospel (12 hours)
This course will present a “meditation outline” for Matthew’s Gospel divided in four questions: Can you accept: 1. Jesus, 2. the church, 3. the cross, and 4. faithful stewardship until Christ comes?

Spiritual Journaling (6 hours)
This course introduces ways of keeping a journal as a means of self-understanding, exploring one’s inner journey an deepening one’s relationship with God.

Spiritual Mentoring

The Nuts and Bolts of Daily Spirituality (12 hours)
This course will identify the stages of commitment we need to focus on in order to live our baptismal commitment in a whole, progressive and exciting way. It is designed to empower those who would like to live intentional spiritual lives themselves, and help others to do so.

Vatican II--What Was It All About? (4 hours)
This Short Course will touch on the major themes of, and significant shifts in outlook expressed in, the second Vatican Council.

Culture and Spirituality (4 hours)
What do spirituality and culture have to do with one another? This course will begin to explore the concepts of culture, mission, and inculturation, particularly addressing the impact of culture on our own spirituality and that of those we are called to serve. This is an exciting and rapidly developing area of theology.

Contemporary Issues in Spirituality (5 hours)
What spiritual issues arise in our contemporary context? Are they the “same thing, different day,” or are there unique spiritual challenges for this moment in time? Could there be spiritual issues we have yet to name? This course will explore these questions and see how our faith can respond.
